If iron doors are what you prefer to see on the front of your house, you’re not alone. Considered to be a popular option for both homeowners and potential homebuyers, wrought iron is appearing in neighborhoods throughout the country. But has it always been this way? When did it become a go-to material for gates, doors, and other structural designs? Read on to learn about the history of iron doors and how they’ve evolved into the custom creations you see today.

Early Centuries

If you were to travel back to the Iron Age, which many historians believe occurred between 1200 BC and 600 BC, you would find iron being used to created weapons and tools. While bronze had been previously used and was considered a more superior material, it wasn’t until multiple civilizations collapsed that people began using iron. Although there is no definitive answer as to why the shift occurred, some believe difficulties attaining the necessary material to create bronze is one reason iron became the chosen material of the time.

Middle Ages-20th Century

During the Middle Ages, the use of wrought iron was no longer used solely for weapons and tools. Instead, many individuals began incorporating it into architectural designs. By the 1200s, a new technique known as the Osmond Process was used by melting pig iron in a hearth. By the 1400s, the process spread throughout Europe but by the late 1700s, Charles and John Wood made significant changes to the way iron was created.

Instead, they developed a process that no longer relied on charcoal to refine the pig iron. They used what is known as a potting and stamping method, which melted the iron in a rusted atmosphere before allowing it to cool. The iron was then broken up by stamping before being washed and reheated in a specialized furnace where it would then be forged.

20th Century and Beyond

By the time the 20th century arrived, James Aston invented a new way to manufacture wrought iron more effectively and efficiently; however, by the 1970s, the mass production of commercial iron use ceased. Fortunately, blacksmiths and expert craftsmen continue to create beautiful wrought iron doors using advanced techniques that offer durability, longevity, and a look that keeps homeowners wanting more.

Used over the centuries to create various styles to fit the time period (i.e. medieval, classical, and Renaissance), wrought iron has been and continues to be used for doors, gates, and other structural aspects throughout the home. While past civilizations may have turned to iron for its security and ability to stand up against the elements, these same reasons are why so many people today are looking to enhance their entryway with wrought iron. It’s structural abilities and beautiful aesthetic make it a welcomed addition to the entrance of any home.
