If you look at various textbooks, designs, and historical imagery, you will notice that wrought iron is not a new development. For centuries, people have relied on this unique material to create elegant imagery, structural barriers, and strong thresholds. The history of wrought iron doors spans far beyond the Middle Ages, but they have evolved into what we now see as beautiful, timeless additions found in homes and buildings. Learn more about how this enduring metal got its start and where it is today.

How Did Iron Doors Get Their Start?

Dating back between 1200 and 600 B.C., the Iron Age was in full effect, with many weapons and tools being created out of iron. Serving as a more attainable material as opposed to bronze during this time, iron continued to remain popular among civilizations as time passed.

Entering the Middle Ages, wrought iron saw more use in architectural design, not just in weapons and tool creation. With the discovery of the Osmond Process in the 1200s, which required melting pig iron on a hearth, the technique took hold and continue to be used throughout the 1400s, spreading throughout Europe.

Several hundreds of years later, in the 1700s, a new process was discovered – potting and stamping. Created by Charles and John Wood, the two used melted iron that had been cooled in a rusted atmosphere and broke it up through the process of stamping. After thoroughly washing the iron and reheating it, the material would then be forged.

What Happened to Iron Doors in the 20th and 21st Centuries?

At the turn of the 20th century, James Aston found a new way to manufacture wrought iron. By the 70s, though, the material was no longer mass-produced but instead, skilled blacksmiths and craftsmen continue, to this day, to practice the art of creating beautifully wrought iron pieces.

Nowadays, homeowners and business owners can’t get enough of the elegant design elements, structurally sound lines, and strong, durable material.

Standing the test of time, wrought iron has been used throughout the centuries to blend in with surrounding décor and aesthetics, as it remains a steadfast material that is always “on trend.” Capable of being used for more than just doors, wrought iron is frequently chosen by professionals to create everything from gates to lanterns, and even banisters.

As you consider what you would like to do to revamp and revitalize your home’s exterior, choose wrought iron to give your humble abode the timeless look that will never go out of style.
